Why this route: a loop, not an out-and-back
Most of the Merzouga dunes are about 550 km from Marrakech. In three days there is no way to make that distance short. What we can do is make every hour in the car show you something new.
On the way out, you take the “road of a thousand kasbahs”: the Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, the Skoura oasis and the Dades Valley. On day two you see two gorges, Dades and Todra, before you reach the sand. On the way back you do not retrace those steps. Instead, the route turns south through Rissani, the dark rocky plains around Alnif, the kasbah village of N’Kob and the long palm groves of the Draa Valley near Agdz. Only the final stretch from Ouarzazate over the Atlas to Marrakech is the same road.
The honest trade-off: this southern return is the longest day of the trip, about 9.5–10 hours of driving before stops. Your driver plans regular breaks, but you will arrive in Marrakech in the evening. Your driver picks you up at your hotel or riad at around [CONFIRM pick-up time, e.g. 07:00–07:30]. If your riad is deep inside the medina, where cars cannot enter, we agree a nearby meeting point in advance.
The road climbs out of the Haouz plain into the High Atlas. You stop for photos near the top of the Tizi n’Tichka pass. In winter there can be snow here, and on rare days the road may close for a few hours.
Around midday you reach Aït Ben Haddou (visit). You cross the riverbed and walk up through the old ksar to the granary at the top, which takes about an hour at an easy pace. You then pass through Ouarzazate, home to Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah (photo stop from outside; a visit inside is optional if time allows [CONFIRM]). After breakfast you drive a short way up the Dades Gorge for the “Monkey Fingers” rock formations (photo stop). If time and road conditions allow, your driver can continue to the viewpoint over the hairpin bends at Tissadrine [CONFIRM if included as standard].
Next is Todra Gorge near Tinghir (visit). You walk into the narrowest part, where the walls rise roughly 300 m on each side and a clear stream runs beside the path. Lunch in the area, not included.
The afternoon drive takes you east across open desert plains (pass through Tinjdad and Erfoud). You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. Here you leave your main luggage in the vehicle or at our base [CONFIRM where luggage is stored] and take only a small overnight bag.
Your camel trek starts at the edge of the dunes and lasts about [CONFIRM camel ride duration, approx. 1–1.5 h]. The timing aims for sunset, when the sand turns orange and then red. Wake early for sunrise over the dunes. Climb a nearby dune or simply watch from camp. You then ride the camel back (or return by 4×4), and have breakfast and a shower at [CONFIRM: camp or hotel in Merzouga] before setting off at around [CONFIRM departure time, e.g. 08:30–09:00].

- Best time: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). In summer, Merzouga often passes 40 °C in the day. From December to February, desert nights can be close to freezing — bring a warm layer and a hat.
- Pack a small overnight bag for the camp: toothbrush, change of clothes, warm layer, torch or phone light, power bank.
- Cash: carry Moroccan dirhams for lunches, drinks, tips and small purchases. ATMs exist in Ouarzazate, Tinghir and Erfoud but not at the camp.

How long is the drive on the last day, really?
About 9.5–10 hours of pure driving over roughly 550 km, plus stops for lunch, photos and rest. With stops, it is a full day: you leave Merzouga in the morning after sunrise and breakfast, and reach Marrakech in the evening.
Why do you return through the Draa Valley instead of the same road?
Because you would otherwise spend a whole day looking at places you saw two days before. The southern road through Rissani, N’Kob and Agdz shows you a different side of the south. The distance is similar, so it costs you no extra time.
Can I go back the same way, via Todra and Dades, if I prefer?
Yes. On a private tour we can adjust the return route. Tell us when you ask for your quote, and we confirm the timing.
Can I ride the camel if I have a bad back?
The camel ride is gentle but bumpy, especially going down dunes. If you have back or knee problems, we can take you to camp by 4×4 instead. You still get the sunset, the camp and the sunrise.
