3-Day Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour (Private)

On our private Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days are enough to see the Sahara, Todra Gorge and Aït Ben Haddou without driving any road twice. This is our classic Fes to Marrakech desert tour in 3 days, run privately for your group only. You leave Fes in the morning and reach the Erg Chebbi dunes the same evening, riding a camel to our camp near Merzouga. Night two is in the Dades Valley after a walk through Todra Gorge. On the last day you visit the old ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and cross the High Atlas to Marrakech.

Your trip starts in one of the world’s great old cities: UNESCO lists the Medina of Fez as a World Heritage site, so many travellers spend a day there before leaving.

It suits travellers who want the desert, the gorges and the kasbah country in one trip, and who are happy with two long driving days in exchange for a short schedule. You travel in your own air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver from the Sahara, and you can stop when you want.

Why this route works from Fes

From Fes, the road south to Merzouga is long but simple. It climbs through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, crosses the high plain around Midelt and drops into the Ziz Valley. There are pleasant stops, but none that need hours. That means you can reach the dunes on the first evening.

Starting the trip with the Sahara has a real advantage. You see the dunes while you are still fresh, and the most famous sights — the gorges, the kasbahs and Aït Ben Haddou — come one after another on the way to Marrakech. You never drive the same road twice.

The trade-off is honest and simple: day 1 and day 3 are long days in the vehicle. If that sounds tiring, look at the 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour with a full desert day, which adds a slower day in Merzouga.

  • Kasbahs and palm oases along the Dades Valley and the road through Skoura.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga (camel trek and camp)

Approx. driving: 460 km, 7.5–8.5 hours of driving before stops. With stops, plan on a full day on the road.

Your driver picks you up in Fes in the morning. If you stay deep inside the medina, he will meet you at the closest gate or car park, and your riad can help with your bags.

  • Ifrane — short photo stop in this tidy mountain town, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its sloping roofs.
  • Azrou cedar forest — short stop to see the cedars and, often, Barbary macaques. They are an endangered species, so please do not feed them.
  • Midelt — lunch stop at a local restaurant your driver recommends (lunch is not included). The area is known for apples.
  • Ziz Valley — photo stop above the long ribbon of palm groves, then on through Errachidia.

You arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon. Leave your main luggage in the vehicle and take a small overnight bag. Then you ride a camel into the dunes to the camp [CONFIRM camel ride duration]. If you have back or knee problems, we can take you to camp by 4×4 instead.

Depending on the season and traffic, you may reach the dunes close to sunset or just after it. In winter, when the days are short, the camel ride can end in the dark [CONFIRM winter timing].

Overnight: Mouhou Luxury Camp, Erg Chebbi (private tent with en-suite shower and toilet) Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Sunrise → Rissani → Tinjdad → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

Approx. driving: 280 km, around 5 hours of driving before stops.

Wake early and climb a dune to watch the sunrise. Breakfast is at camp [CONFIRM breakfast location — camp or hotel in Merzouga], then you return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4 [CONFIRM] and meet your vehicle.

  • Rissani — short stop or drive-through in the old market town of the Tafilalt. If your day falls on a souk day, the market is worth a look (souk days are traditionally Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday — [CONFIRM souk days]).
  • Tinjdad — pass through this oasis town on the road west.
  • Todra Gorge — visit. You walk for around 30–60 minutes at the narrowest part of the gorge, where the walls rise to roughly 300 m. Lunch is usually near the gorge (not included).
  • Dades Valley — you arrive in the late afternoon. If light allows, there is a photo stop at the rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers” [CONFIRM — depends on hotel location and timing].

Overnight: Hotel or riad in the Dades Valley, such as Riad Gabsi or Ksar Sultan, or similar [CONFIRM] Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Day 3: Dades → Valley of Roses → Skoura → Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Tizi n’Tichka → Marrakech

Approx. driving: 320–350 km, 6–7 hours of driving before stops. Arrival in Marrakech is usually early evening [CONFIRM typical arrival time].

  • Kalaat M’Gouna (Valley of Roses) — pass through; photo stop on request. In May the town holds its rose festival.
  • Skoura — photo stop at the palm oasis and the outside of Kasbah Amridil.
  • Ouarzazate — pass through, with a photo stop near Taourirt Kasbah. Atlas Studios is not included on this tour, as there is not enough time.
  • Aït Ben Haddou — visit. You walk up through the ksar to the old granary at the top. A local guide is available on site [CONFIRM — included or optional, and any fee]. Lunch is usually here (not included).
  • Tizi n’Tichka — photo stop at the pass (approx. 2,260 m), then the winding descent to Marrakech.

Private tour, or the shared version?

This page is for the private tour: the vehicle and driver are only for your group, and you choose the pace and the stops within the route. If you are travelling alone or on a tighter budget, we also run a shared 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour in a small group. On that tour you share the vehicle and the schedule with other travellers, but you still get your own private room and your own private tent.

Is a Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days long right for you?

A good fit if you: – Start in Fes and need to end in Marrakech. – Want one night in the desert and still see the gorges and Aït Ben Haddou. – Are fine with two long days in the vehicle (day 1 and day 3). – Prefer your own vehicle and the freedom to stop for photos.

Probably not the best fit if you: – Get very tired or unwell on long drives — choose 4 or 5 days instead. – Want a full day exploring the desert — the 4-day version adds one. – Have only two days — the 2-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour is possible, but day 2 is very long. – Are travelling in the other direction — see the 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

Practical tips

  • Best seasons: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Summer days in Merzouga often pass 40 °C. From December to February, desert nights can be close to freezing and Tichka can have snow.
  • Pack a small overnight bag for the camp: warm layer, toothbrush, phone charger, headtorch, and any medicine. Your main suitcase stays in the vehicle [CONFIRM luggage storage arrangement].
  • Bring cash in dirhams for lunches, drinks, tips and small purchases. Card payment is not always possible in rural areas.
  • Sun and dust: sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf are useful on the dunes.
  • Children: the tour works for families, but the long days can be hard for young children. Ask us about child seats [CONFIRM availability] and child prices.
  • Food: vegetarian and vegan meals are available on request. Tell us when you book.

FAQs

How long is the drive on the first day?

About 460 km and 7.5–8.5 hours of pure driving from Fes to Merzouga. With stops in Ifrane, Azrou and Midelt, most of the day is on the road. You arrive in the late afternoon in time for the camel ride.

What time do we arrive in Marrakech on day 3?

Usually in the early evening [CONFIRM typical arrival time]. It depends on how long you stay at Aït Ben Haddou and on traffic on the Tichka pass. If you have an evening train, flight or dinner booking, tell us so we can plan the day.

Is the second night in the Dades Valley or Todra Gorge?

In the Dades Valley. You walk in Todra Gorge in the middle of day 2 and continue for about one more hour to Dades, which places you closer to Aït Ben Haddou for the last day.

Can we visit Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate?

Not on the 3-day schedule — there is not enough time without arriving in Marrakech very late. If the film studios matter to you, the 5-day version includes a night in Ouarzazate.

Can our riad in the Fes medina arrange the pick-up?

Yes. Cars cannot enter most of the medina, so your driver meets you at the nearest gate or car park. Send us your riad name and we will agree the exact meeting point and time with you.

What if one of us cannot ride a camel?

We can take that person — or the whole group — to camp by 4×4. This is common for travellers with back or knee problems, and you still have the evening at camp and the sunrise.

Can we add an extra night?

Yes. The most popular change is a second night in Merzouga, which turns this into our 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour. Ask us for a quote with your dates.

Before you leave Fes: a short checklist

On a Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days pass quickly, and the first morning starts the longest drive. A little preparation the evening before makes day 1 much easier.

  • Agree the meeting point with your riad and our team, especially if you stay deep in the medina.
  • Pack your camp bag before you go to sleep, so you only need to carry it to the car.
  • Charge everything: phone, camera and power bank.
  • Have breakfast early if your riad can serve it before pick-up [CONFIRM usual pick-up time].

After you arrive in Marrakech

You reach Marrakech in the early evening of day 3, after the Tichka pass. Keep that evening simple: a short walk and dinner close to your riad.

If you have time after the tour, two or three nights in Marrakech make a comfortable stay. You can explore the medina at a slower pace, and add day trips from Marrakech to the coast or the mountains.

Which month suits this route best?

Every month works for a Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days long, but the experience changes. In April, May and October, long evenings help you reach the dunes in daylight. In December and January, you trade shorter days for quieter sights and clear, cold nights.

Tell us your month when you ask for a quote. We plan each Fes to Marrakech desert tour 3 days long around the season, adjusting pick-up times and stops so you see the main places in the best light.
