Flying in is the fastest way to reach the Sahara, and our Errachidia desert tours turn a short domestic flight into a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes. Errachidia desert tours start where most Sahara trips end their long drive. Errachidia is the closest city with an airport to Merzouga, about 130 km and roughly two hours by road from the Erg Chebbi dunes. If you fly in, you can be on a camel by sunset on the same day, instead of spending a full day on the road from Fes or Marrakech.
Our team is based in Merzouga, so we’re the local side of the trip: we meet you at Errachidia [CONFIRM airport pick-up offered], drive you to the desert and bring you back — or on to Fes or Marrakech.

For general travel information about Morocco, including its regions and practical advice, the Moroccan National Tourist Office is a useful official source.
Below you’ll find why Errachidia makes sense, how the arrival works, and four sample itineraries you can book as they are or adjust.
Why fly to Errachidia for the Sahara?
From Fes or Marrakech, reaching Merzouga by road takes most of a day (about 8 hours from Fes and 9–10 hours or more from Marrakech, before stops). Flying to Errachidia replaces that day with a short flight and a 2-hour drive.
Good reasons to choose Errachidia: – You’re short on time. A 2-day desert trip from Errachidia has only about 4 hours of driving in total, compared with roughly 16 hours from Fes. – You don’t enjoy long road days, or you’re travelling with young children or older relatives. – You want to end your trip somewhere else. Fly in to Errachidia and drive out to Fes or Marrakech, seeing the gorges on the way.
Things to check first: – Flights are limited. Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif Airport, code ERH) is a small regional airport. Domestic flights, mainly from Casablanca, don’t run every day [CONFIRM current routes and days]. Check the schedule before you plan anything else. – Flight prices vary. Sometimes the flight is cheap; sometimes a private road trip for a group costs less. We’re happy to help you compare. – There’s little to see in Errachidia itself. It’s a working town and a gateway. Plan to leave the airport straight for the desert.
How the airport pick-up works
- Send us your flight number and arrival time when you ask for a quote.
- Your driver waits at arrivals with a sign showing your name [CONFIRM].
- If your flight is delayed, we track it and adjust [CONFIRM delay policy]. If you land too late to reach the dunes before dark, we can take you to camp by 4×4 or switch the first night to a hotel in Merzouga.
- The drive to Merzouga goes south along the Ziz Valley palm groves, through Erfoud, to the edge of Erg Chebbi: approx. 130 km, about 2 hours.
Arriving by bus? Errachidia also has long-distance bus services [CONFIRM operators]. We can meet you at the bus station instead.
Need only a transfer, without a tour? Errachidia airport to Merzouga transfers: [CONFIRM offered and price].

Option A: 2 days — fly in, dunes, fly out
Best if you have one night and a return flight from Errachidia.
Day 1 — Errachidia – Merzouga (camel trek and camp). Pick-up at the airport around [CONFIRM — depends on flight]. Drive about 2 hours through the Ziz Valley and Erfoud to Merzouga. Late afternoon: leave your main luggage in the vehicle, take a small bag and ride a camel to camp at sunset (about [CONFIRM camel ride duration]). Dinner and campfire with Berber drums. Overnight: private tent with own shower and toilet, Mouhou Luxury Camp. Meals: dinner.
Day 2 — Sunrise – Errachidia. Watch the sunrise from the dunes, ride back, have breakfast. If your flight is in the afternoon [CONFIRM typical departure times], there may be time for a short stop in Rissani on the way, especially on a market day (traditionally Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday [CONFIRM]). Drop-off at the airport. Meals: breakfast.
Want the full detail of the camel ride? See our overnight camel trek in Erg Chebbi.
Option B: 3 days — a slow desert stay
Best if you want time in Merzouga, not just a night.
Day 1 — Errachidia – Merzouga (hotel). Airport pick-up and 2-hour drive. Afternoon free at a kasbah-style hotel by the dunes, such as Kasbah Le Berger or Riad Madu, or similar [CONFIRM]. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 — Desert day and camp night. In the morning, explore by vehicle: Khamlia village for Gnawa music, the Rissani market town, and the open desert around Erg Chebbi. You can add a 4×4 desert tour around Erg Chebbi [CONFIRM included or extra]. In the late afternoon, camel trek to camp. Meals: breakfast and dinner.
Day 3 — Sunrise – Errachidia. Sunrise, breakfast, then the drive back to the airport for your flight. Meals: breakfast.
Option C1: 3 days — Errachidia to Fes
Best if you’ll continue to Fes, northern Morocco or Chefchaouen after the desert.
Day 1 — Errachidia – Merzouga. Airport pick-up, drive to the dunes, camel trek, night in the camp.
Day 2 — Desert day. Sunrise, breakfast, then a day around Erg Chebbi (villages, market, or rest). Night in a hotel in Merzouga [CONFIRM].
Day 3 — Merzouga – Fes. About 460 km and 7.5–8.5 hours of pure driving, via Erfoud, back through Errachidia, the Ziz Gorges, Midelt (lunch), Ifrane and the Middle Atlas cedar forest. Drop-off at your accommodation in Fes in the evening.
Honest note: the road to Fes passes back through Errachidia, so you’ll see the first 130 km twice. If you’re comparing this with a trip that starts in Fes, see our Fes desert tours to Merzouga.
Option C2: 3–4 days — Errachidia to Marrakech via Todra and Dades
Best if you’ll fly home from Marrakech or spend time there after the desert. This is the second half of our 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour, with the flight replacing the long first day from Fes.
Day 1 — Errachidia – Merzouga. Airport pick-up, 2-hour drive, camel trek to camp, dinner and campfire.
Day 2 — Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley. Sunrise and breakfast, then drive west via Tinjdad to Todra Gorge (visit and short walk between rock walls about 300 m high). Continue to the Dades Valley for the night. Approx. 280 km, about 5 hours of driving plus stops. Overnight: hotel in the Dades Valley, such as Riad Gabsi or Ksar Sultan, or similar [CONFIRM]. Meals: breakfast and dinner.
Day 3 — Dades – Ouarzazate – Aït Ben Haddou – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech. Drive through the Valley of Roses (Kalaat M’Gouna — photo stop) and Skoura to Ouarzazate (pass through or short stop). Visit Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar. Lunch nearby (not included). Then cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (about 2,260 m) and descend to Marrakech, arriving in the evening. Roughly 7–8 hours of driving plus stops — a long day.
4-day version: add a full desert day in Merzouga (as in Option B) before heading west. It costs one more night but makes the trip much calmer. For more ways to combine Marrakech and the desert, see Marrakech desert tours to Merzouga.

Tips for flying into Errachidia
- Book flights first, tour second. With limited flight days, the flight schedule decides your tour dates.
- Keep your luggage simple. Domestic flights can have stricter baggage allowances [CONFIRM airline rules]. For the camp night, a small backpack is all you need.
- Allow a buffer for your return flight. We plan to reach the airport well before check-in, but don’t book a same-day international connection in Casablanca without spare time.
- Weather: summer days in Merzouga often pass 40 °C; winter nights can be close to freezing. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Read our Merzouga travel guide for seasons and packing.
- Cash: bring dirhams. ATMs exist in Errachidia and Erfoud [CONFIRM], but not at the camp.
FAQs about Errachidia desert tours
How far is Errachidia from Merzouga? About 130 km, roughly 2 hours by road, through the Ziz Valley and Erfoud.
Can I go to the desert camp on the same day I land? Yes, if your flight lands early enough to reach Merzouga before sunset (about [CONFIRM latest workable landing time by season]). If you land later, we take you to camp by 4×4 or book a hotel night first.
Which airlines fly to Errachidia? Flights are mainly domestic, typically from Casablanca [CONFIRM airlines, routes and days]. International travellers usually connect in Casablanca.
Can I fly in to Errachidia and leave from Marrakech or Fes? Yes. Options C1 and C2 end in Fes or Marrakech. Many travellers use this to avoid one long road day.
Is Errachidia worth visiting? It’s mainly a gateway town. Most travellers drive straight from the airport to Merzouga. The Ziz Valley palm groves just outside town are the main sight along the way.
What if my flight is cancelled or delayed? Tell us as soon as you know. We’ll move the pick-up and adjust the plan where we can [CONFIRM delay/cancellation policy and any extra costs].

How to choose between Errachidia desert tours
The right option depends mostly on where you are going after the desert and how you are leaving:
- Return flight from Errachidia, only one night free: Option A.
- Return flight from Errachidia, two nights free: Option B, for a calmer stay by the dunes.
- Continuing to Fes, Chefchaouen or the north: Option C1.
- Flying home from Marrakech: Option C2, ideally the 4-day version.
If you are unsure, we usually suggest at least two nights near the dunes, because the arrival day already includes a flight. Tell us your plans and we will be honest about which of our Errachidia desert tours fits best.
Timing your arrival with the sunset
The sunset camel ride is the highlight of the first day on Errachidia desert tours, so your landing time matters. Sunset in Merzouga is roughly 17:30–18:00 in midwinter and close to 20:00 in midsummer [CONFIRM by season].
As a rough guide, allow about 30 minutes to collect bags and meet your driver, 2 hours on the road and some time to settle before the ride. Landing at least four hours before sunset keeps the first afternoon relaxed.
Stops between the airport and the dunes
The 130 km drive is short, but it is not empty:
- Ziz Valley palm groves: long views over date palms and old earth-built villages.
- Source Bleue de Meski: a spring-fed pool in a palm grove, a short detour from the main road [CONFIRM stop offered].
- Erfoud: known for workshops that cut and polish fossil-rich stone.
On Errachidia desert tours we keep these stops short on arrival day, so you reach Merzouga in good time. They fit better on the way back if your flight leaves later.
Packing for a fly-in desert trip
Errachidia desert tours begin with a domestic flight, so travel light and pack with the camp night in mind.
- A soft bag or backpack, easier to load than a hard case
- A warm layer for the evening, even in spring and autumn
- A scarf or buff for sun and wind
- A small torch or head torch
- Medication and chargers in your hand luggage
Errachidia desert tours with children
The short airport drive makes this one of the easiest ways to bring children to the Sahara. Younger children who are unsure about camels can go to camp by 4×4. Child seats and family tents: [CONFIRM availability].
Option B usually suits families best, because the second day in Merzouga is free for playing on the dunes and resting, and none of our Errachidia desert tours involve a long road day for small children unless you choose to finish in Fes or Marrakech.
Combining a flight and a road trip
Errachidia desert tours also work well as half of a longer journey. You can fly in and drive out to Fes or Marrakech, or start by road from Fes and fly home from Errachidia via Casablanca [CONFIRM flight days]. For road-only options, compare our Fes desert tours to Merzouga and Marrakech desert tours to Merzouga.
