Things to Do in Merzouga: Desert Activities with Locals

Use this page to compare Merzouga desert activities side by side and plan time in the dunes that suits your energy, your group and the season. Merzouga sits on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, the large sand sea in south-east Morocco. Most visitors come for one night in the dunes, but there is much more to do if you have time. This page brings together our Merzouga desert activities — camel treks, 4×4 tours, quad and buggy rides, and the simple things like sandboarding and stargazing — so you can compare them and build a day or two that suits you.

Our team was founded by people born in Merzouga, and we run these trips the way we would show the area to friends [CONFIRM: which activities are run in-house vs with partners].

The main activities

Overnight camel trek

This is the classic Merzouga experience and the one most people come for. You ride a camel into the dunes in the late afternoon, stop for sunset on a ridge, and spend the night at Mouhou Luxury Camp, where every tent has its own bathroom. It suits independent travellers who reach Merzouga by bus or car and just need the desert part. If riding is not possible for you, a 4×4 can take you to camp instead. Read the full details, including meeting point and what to pack, on the overnight camel trek page.

4×4 tour around Erg Chebbi

The 4×4 circuit is about people and places around the dunes rather than speed. Typical stops include Gnawa music in Khamlia, tea with a nomad family, an old mining area and, on the full day, the market town of Rissani. It is our first suggestion for families and for anyone with a free day between two desert nights. See stops, half-day and full-day options on the 4×4 desert tour page.

Quad biking and buggy rides

For an energetic hour or two, ride a quad or a two-seat buggy behind a guide. Rides start with a safety briefing and helmets [CONFIRM], and our guides keep to routes away from the camps [CONFIRM]. It is loud and dusty — part of the fun for some, a reason to skip it for others. Ages, licence rules and kit are on the quad biking page.

Sandboarding

Climbing a dune with a board and sliding down is simple, tiring and very popular with children. Boards are available at camp [CONFIRM: free or paid]. It works best on steep, wind-packed faces in the early morning or late afternoon. Expect to walk back up — there are no lifts in the Sahara.

Stargazing and quiet time

Some of the best moments need no booking. After dinner at camp, walk a few minutes away from the fire and let your eyes adjust. On a clear night around the new moon you can often see the Milky Way. In the morning, climb the nearest dune before sunrise. For what a night at camp looks like, see our Merzouga desert camp.

Our approach: local team, clear standards

Running activities in a place where we live means we see the effects of tourism every day. These are the standards we hold ourselves to:
– Camels: [CONFIRM welfare commitments — e.g., rider weight limit, rest days, shade and water, no rides in peak summer heat].
– Motor vehicles: quads, buggies and 4×4s keep away from camps, nomad homes and grazing animals [CONFIRM].
– Villages and families: visits are arranged with people we know, and they are paid for their time [CONFIRM].

Ask before you photograph anyone.
– Shopping: no forced stops. If you visit a fossil workshop or market, buying is entirely up to you.
– Waste: [CONFIRM camp waste and plastic policy].

When to go: Merzouga desert activities by season

Spring (March–May): pleasant days and cool nights. Wind is more common, and a sandstorm can delay a quad ride or blur sunset. The best overall season for combining activities.

Summer (June–August): daytime heat often passes 40 °C. Do active things at sunrise or after about 17:00, rest in the middle of the day, and drink a lot of water. Nights at camp are warm.

Autumn (September–November): similar to spring, with calmer air in many years. Busy, so ask for a quote early [CONFIRM].

Winter (December–February): sunny, mild days but cold nights that can approach freezing. Pack warm layers. After a wet winter, the 4×4 tour may include a seasonal lake.

Which activities fit your trip?

If you are on one of our multi-day tours

Most of our tours include one night at camp with a camel trek. If your tour has a full day in the dunes, add the 4×4 circuit in the morning and a short quad ride or sandboarding in the afternoon. On a one-night tour, time is short: a quad ride before the camel leaves is usually the only realistic add-on [CONFIRM timing].

If you are travelling independently

Plan at least two nights in Merzouga if you can. A simple plan: – Day 1: arrive by midday, rest, ride out to camp by camel for sunset. – Day 2: sunrise, return, breakfast, then the full-day 4×4 tour. Overnight in Merzouga or a second night at camp. – Day 3: early quad ride or sandboarding, then travel on.

If you are flying in

Errachidia airport is about two hours’ drive from Merzouga. See our Errachidia to Merzouga desert tours for transfers and short itineraries that start there.

How booking works

There is no online checkout. Tell us which activities interest you, your dates and how many people. We reply with a combined quote and a suggested timing for each activity. You confirm only when you are happy. Prices depend on group size, private or shared arrangements, season and which extras you choose — you will find example price tables on each activity page [CONFIRM PRICE].

Questions about activities in Merzouga

Can we book activities without booking a full tour?

Yes. All the activities on this page can be booked on their own if you are already in Merzouga [CONFIRM].

How many activities can we fit into one day?

Comfortably two: for example a half-day 4×4 tour in the morning and a camel trek at sunset. In summer, plan only one active slot in the morning and one in the evening.

Which activity is best for young children?

The 4×4 tour and sandboarding. Camel rides are fine for most children with a parent close by [CONFIRM minimum age]; quad rides have age limits.

How far ahead should we book?

For spring, autumn and holiday periods, ask a few weeks ahead. In quieter months, a day or two can be enough [CONFIRM]. WhatsApp is the fastest way to check.

What if the weather turns?

Rain is rare but wind is not. If a sandstorm or strong wind makes an activity unsafe or unpleasant, we move it to another time or day where possible [CONFIRM refund/rebooking terms].

Do activities run during Ramadan?

Yes, activities run as normal [CONFIRM]. Some local cafés may close during the day, so carry water and snacks.

Plan your Merzouga days

Planning a full day around the dunes

The secret to enjoying Merzouga desert activities is timing. The sand is soft and cool early in the morning, hot and bright by midday, and golden again in the last two hours of light. Plan active things for the edges of the day and something slow in the middle.

A sample day in spring or autumn

  • 06:30, sunrise: climb the dune nearest your camp or hotel.
  • 08:00, breakfast: and a shower if you need one.
  • 09:00, 4×4 tour: Khamlia, a nomad family and the old mining area, back by lunch.
  • 13:00, lunch and rest: shade, mint tea and a nap.
  • 16:00, sandboarding or a short quad ride: while the light softens.
  • 17:30, camel trek: to camp, timed for sunset.
  • After dinner, stargazing: a few minutes’ walk away from the fire.

This plan fits four or five Merzouga desert activities into one day without rushing. If it feels like too much, drop the quad ride. The dunes are just as good at walking pace.

A sample day in summer

From June to August, move everything to the cool hours. Start the 4×4 tour at sunrise, be back before 11:00, and rest until about 17:00. Summer Merzouga desert activities work best in short, early sessions with plenty of water.

A sample day in winter

Winter days are mild and bright but short. You can be out at almost any time between late morning and late afternoon, so winter Merzouga desert activities need less careful timing. Start a little later, when the night cold has gone, and reach camp before sunset, because the temperature drops fast.

Getting to the starting point

Most activities start from the edge of the dunes in Merzouga or from our camp [CONFIRM meeting points]. If you are staying at a hotel in the village, we can usually collect you [CONFIRM]. If you are driving yourself, leave your car at your hotel: rental cars should never go onto the sand.

Plan two nights if you want more than the camel trek. One night gives you sunset and sunrise; two nights give you a full day to try several Merzouga desert activities at a relaxed pace.

What to wear and bring

You don’t need special kit. Comfortable, loose clothes and a few small items make a big difference:

  • Long, light trousers for the camel and the quad
  • A scarf or cheche to cover your mouth and nose in wind or dust
  • Wrap-around sunglasses to keep sand out of your eyes
  • Closed shoes for quad rides; sandals or bare feet are fine on soft sand
  • A warm layer for the evening, even in spring and autumn
  • A small bag to protect your phone and camera from sand

Leave jewellery and anything valuable at your hotel or in the vehicle [CONFIRM]. Sand gets into zips, pockets and lenses very quickly.

Choosing activities for your group

Couples

Couples often choose a camel trek at sunset and a quiet night at camp, then one active morning in a buggy. Two-seat buggies are popular because you ride side by side. Keep the evening calm: some of the best Merzouga desert activities are simply watching the light change.

Families with children

Children usually love sandboarding and the 4×4 stops, especially the Gnawa music in Khamlia. Choose Merzouga desert activities with short sessions and plenty of breaks. Quad rides have age limits [CONFIRM], and young children may prefer the 4×4 to a long camel ride.

Older travellers or limited mobility

You can still enjoy the dunes without riding or climbing. A 4×4 can take you to camp, and the half-day circuit involves only short walks. Tell us about any mobility needs, and we will suggest Merzouga desert activities that match them.

Photographers

Sunrise and sunset are the obvious times, but the blue light just before sunrise is often better for wide shots of the dunes. Ask your guide to time your Merzouga desert activities so that you are on a high ridge at those moments, not in a vehicle.

Respecting the desert and the people who live here

Erg Chebbi is home to families who have lived here for generations. A few simple habits help Merzouga desert activities stay welcome in the community:

  • Ask before photographing people, homes or animals
  • Keep to the routes your guide chooses, especially on quads and buggies
  • Take all rubbish back with you, including small items like bottle caps
  • Buy tea, crafts or fossils only if you want them; there is no obligation
  • Keep music and voices low near camps and homes at night

Fossils and minerals are sold all over the area. If you want to buy, ask the seller what exactly you are looking at, and pay only what the piece is worth to you.

Combining activities with a multi-day tour

If you are on a tour from Marrakech or Fes, your time near the dunes depends on how many nights you spend there. With one night, you usually have the camel trek and sunrise only. With two nights, or a full desert day, you can add two or three more Merzouga desert activities.

Tours with a full day in the desert include the 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour and the 3-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour. Compare all routes on our Marrakech desert tours and Fes desert tours pages.

Activities when the wind blows

Spring winds can lift the sand and hide the horizon for a few hours. It rarely lasts all day. When it happens, your guide may change the order of Merzouga desert activities: a visit to Khamlia or Rissani in the morning, and the camel trek once the air settles in the evening.

If the wind stays strong, quad rides and sandboarding are usually the first to be postponed, because sand in the eyes makes them unpleasant and less safe. Keep your scarf and sunglasses with you, and a zip bag for your phone. A windy afternoon at camp with tea and a book is still a good afternoon in the desert.

More questions

Can we try more than one activity on a one-night stay?

Sometimes. If you arrive in Merzouga by early afternoon, there may be time for a short quad ride or sandboarding before the camel leaves for camp [CONFIRM timing]. Tell us your arrival time and we will say honestly what fits.

Is it safe to be active in the heat?

Yes, if you plan around it. In summer, avoid the hours from late morning to late afternoon, drink much more water than usual and wear a hat. Your guide will move or shorten Merzouga desert activities if the heat becomes too strong.

Can we do something on the morning we leave?

Yes, if your onward journey is short. A sunrise walk and a short quad ride before breakfast are realistic. If you have a long drive ahead, such as Merzouga to Fes or Marrakech, keep the morning simple and save the longer Merzouga desert activities for a day with no driving.

Can we bring a drone?

Drones are tightly restricted in Morocco and may be held at customs, so check the current rules before you travel [CONFIRM]. Ordinary cameras and phones are welcome everywhere, as long as you ask before photographing people.
