Marrakech day trips are the simplest way to see mountains, waterfalls or the Atlantic coast without changing hotels, and every trip below brings you back the same evening. Have one free day in Marrakech and want to see more of Morocco? These day trips from Marrakech take you to the High Atlas, the Atlantic coast and the waterfalls of the Middle Atlas foothills — and bring you back to your riad the same evening. Each trip runs with your own driver in a private air-conditioned vehicle [CONFIRM private/shared], with pick-up at your accommodation.

Essaouira’s walled old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you can read about the Medina of Essaouira (formerly Mogador) before your day on the coast.
The biggest difference between them is not the scenery — it is how many hours you spend in the car. Below we compare that honestly, so you can choose the trip that fits your energy, your season and your group.
Compare our Marrakech day trips at a glance
| Day trip | Driving (total, approx.) | Door to door | Time on site | Activity level | Best season | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ourika Valley | 2–3 h | ~8 h (09:00–17:00) | 5–6 h | Easy to moderate; upper falls need scrambling | Spring; summer for river shade (watch storms) | Short stays, families, first taste of the Atlas |
| Ouzoud Waterfalls | 5–6 h | ~10 h (08:00–18:00) | ~4 h | Moderate; many steps uphill | Spring (strongest water) | Nature lovers, active families, wildlife |
| Essaouira | ~6 h | ~11 h (08:00–19:00) | 4.5–5 h | Easy; flat walking | All year; especially summer (cooler coast) | Free time, seafood, crafts, a slower day |

All times are estimates and depend on traffic, weather and how long you stay at each stop [CONFIRM all times].
The “hours in the car” test
A simple way to choose: compare the time you spend driving with the time you spend out of the vehicle.
- Ourika Valley — the best ratio. Around 2–3 hours of driving for 5–6 hours in the valley. Choose it if you are tired, jet-lagged, travelling with small children or simply do not enjoy long drives.
- Ouzoud Waterfalls — a balanced day. Roughly equal time driving and walking, with a mostly straightforward road.
- Essaouira — longer driving, but on a flat, straight road that rarely causes car sickness. You get a generous block of free time in town.
- Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate — the most driving and the longest day. The road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass is part of the experience, but it is winding. Worth it if the High Atlas and the ksar are high on your list; less ideal for anyone who gets car sick.

Which trip suits you?
If you are travelling with young children: Ourika is the easiest. Essaouira also works well — a flat town with a beach. Ouzoud suits children who are happy on steps. We would not usually suggest Aït Ben Haddou for very young children because of the long, winding drive.
If you are visiting in July or August: Essaouira is usually the most comfortable — the coast is often much cooler than Marrakech. Ourika gives shade by the river but is busy at weekends and can have afternoon storms. Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate are very hot in the afternoon.
If you are visiting in winter (December–February): Essaouira and Ourika are the most reliable. Snow can affect the Tizi n’Tichka pass, so the Aït Ben Haddou trip may need to change at short notice.
If you love walking and nature: Ouzoud first, then Ourika if you are comfortable scrambling over boulders to the upper falls.
If you want history and architecture: Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage ksar) or Essaouira (UNESCO-listed medina and sea ramparts).
If you want to switch off: Essaouira — long lunch, sea air, no fixed programme in town.
How our private Marrakech day trips work
- Send us your plans — date, number of travellers, where you are staying and which trip you like.
- Receive a clear quote with suggested pick-up time.
- Confirm your booking [CONFIRM deposit/payment arrangement for day trips — see booking terms].
- Travel — your driver meets you at your riad or hotel (or the nearest point a car can reach in the medina).
Because the vehicle is yours for the day, you can adjust the pace — stay longer at a viewpoint, skip a stop, or ask for a coffee break. Your driver speaks English [CONFIRM French on request] and knows good local places for lunch. On most trips a local guide leads the walk at the main site, either included or paid on the spot [CONFIRM per trip].
What it costs and why
We do not show a single fixed price because the cost depends on your group. A private day trip price is built from:
- The vehicle and driver for the day — the same cost for one traveller or several, so per-person price falls as your group grows.
- Distance — Aït Ben Haddou costs more than Ourika because it is roughly three times the driving.
- Vehicle size — car, 4×4 or minibus [CONFIRM].
- Season — some peak dates may cost more [CONFIRM].
- Local extras — guides, entry tickets, boat rides and lunch are usually paid locally.
| Day trip | 2 travellers, per person | 4 travellers, per person |
|---|---|---|
| Ourika Valley | €100 | €50 |
| Ouzoud Waterfalls | €100 | €50 |
| Essaouira | €100 | €50 |
| Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate | €100 | €50 |
Lunch is not included on any of our day trips — your driver will suggest a good local place, and you pay directly.
Other trips on request
We can also discuss other short trips from Marrakech, such as an afternoon in the Agafay stony desert or a day in Imlil at the foot of Toubkal [CONFIRM whether these are operated, and their format]. Ask on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Want the real Sahara instead?
None of these day trips reaches the sand dunes. The big dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga are around 9–10 hours’ drive from Marrakech, so they need at least two days — and three days is a much more comfortable minimum. If the Sahara is your main goal, see our Marrakech desert tours to Merzouga (2 to 5 days), which include a night at our desert camp with private tents and en-suite bathrooms.
Day trips from Marrakech: FAQs
Which day trip from Marrakech has the least driving?
The Ourika Valley. Setti Fatma is about 65 km away, so the total driving is around 2–3 hours for the whole day.
Can I see the Sahara desert on a day trip from Marrakech?
Not the large dunes. Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is too far for one day. Agafay near Marrakech is a stony desert landscape, not sand dunes [CONFIRM if Agafay is offered]. For dunes, choose a multi-day desert tour.
Can we combine two destinations in one day?
Usually not in a comfortable way — each trip already fills a full day. Ourika is short enough that a small extra stop on the way may be possible [CONFIRM]. Ask us and we will be honest about the timing.
Are your day trips private or shared?
Our day trips are run privately, with your own vehicle and driver [CONFIRM — and state whether any shared departures exist].
What time do the trips start?
Between about 07:00 (Aït Ben Haddou) and 09:00 (Ourika), depending on the distance. The exact time is confirmed in your quote.
Which trip is best on a rainy or stormy day?
Essaouira is the safest choice in unsettled weather. In the mountains, heavy rain can cause flash floods in Ourika and snow can affect the Tichka pass, so we may suggest changing your day trip.

Planning Marrakech day trips around your stay
Where a day trip fits in your plans
Try not to book a long trip for the morning after a late arrival. Jet lag and an early pick-up are a hard mix. A gentle first day in the medina, followed by a day out of the city, usually works better. With three or four days in Marrakech, one day trip is plenty for most people; two is possible if one of them is short, such as Ourika.
Combining day trips with a desert tour
Some travellers add Marrakech day trips before or after a multi-day desert tour. If your desert tour already crosses the High Atlas, you will see Aït Ben Haddou on the way, so a separate day trip there would repeat the same road. Ourika, Ouzoud or Essaouira make better choices in that case.
Choosing the day of the week
If you can, visit Ourika on a weekday, when the riverside is calmer. For the other trips, the day of the week matters less than the weather forecast, so we may suggest swapping days if rain or strong wind is expected.
What a typical day looks like
Before you leave
Your quote gives a suggested pick-up time. The evening before, check the time and the exact meeting point with us on WhatsApp, especially if your riad is deep in the medina. Ask your riad the night before about an early breakfast; many can prepare something if you leave before their usual breakfast time.
The morning drive
Most Marrakech day trips start with a quiet drive out of the city before the traffic builds. Your driver will suggest a coffee stop on the way. This is a good moment to tell him how you want to spend the day: more walking, more photos, a long lunch or an early return.
The middle of the day
On site, a local guide usually leads the main walk [CONFIRM per trip], then you have lunch at a place your driver suggests or one you choose yourself. Allow time. Lunch in Morocco is rarely quick, and a tagine is cooked to order.
The drive back
The return is usually quieter. On the longer Marrakech day trips, such as Essaouira or Aït Ben Haddou, many travellers sleep for part of the way. You are back at your riad or hotel in the late afternoon or evening, depending on the trip.
What to bring on Marrakech day trips
For every trip
- Water, sun cream, sunglasses and a hat
- Comfortable shoes with good grip
- Cash in dirhams for lunch, guides, tickets and tips
- A light layer, because the mountains and the coast can be cooler than the city
- Travel-sickness tablets if you need them
Trip by trip
- Ourika Valley: shoes you do not mind getting wet, with grip for the rocks on the way to the upper falls.
- Ouzoud Waterfalls: comfortable shoes for the steps, and some cash if you want a boat ride at the bottom of the falls.
- Essaouira: a windproof jacket. The coast is often windy, even in summer.
- Aït Ben Haddou: a warm layer for the Tichka pass, which is much cooler than Marrakech, especially in winter.
Which trip for which traveller?
Couples
Essaouira suits a slow day with a long lunch by the sea. Aït Ben Haddou suits couples who enjoy history and big mountain views.
Families with teenagers
Of all our Marrakech day trips, Ouzoud often works best for families with teenagers. There is walking, wildlife and water, and the day is not too long. Teenagers who like films may also enjoy Aït Ben Haddou.
Older travellers
Among our Marrakech day trips, choose the one with the least uneven ground and the fewest bends. Essaouira’s flat streets suit most people. Tell us about any mobility needs and we will plan the pace with you.
Photographers
The best light comes early and late in the day. Because the drive sets the timetable on most Marrakech day trips, ask us when you book if you want to leave earlier or stay later [CONFIRM any extra cost for a longer day].
Solo travellers
Because our day trips are private [CONFIRM], one traveller pays for the whole vehicle, so the price per person is highest when you travel alone. Ask for a quote and we will be clear about the cost.
Seasonal notes
Spring (March to May)
Spring is usually the best season for Marrakech day trips. Ouzoud has the most water after the winter rains, and the Atlas valleys are green.
Summer (June to August)
If you choose an inland trip in summer, ask for the earliest pick-up so that you are on site before the worst of the heat.
Autumn (September to November)
Pleasant temperatures return, and autumn is another good season for Marrakech day trips. Storms can still form over the mountains in early autumn, so keep an eye on the forecast for Ourika.
Winter (December to February)
Clear, cool days are common. Pack a warm jacket for the early start; mornings in Marrakech can be cold even when the afternoon is sunny.
Respectful travel on Marrakech day trips
- Ask before you photograph people, especially women and children in villages, and accept a “no” with a smile.
- Dress modestly in villages. Covering shoulders and knees is appreciated.
- Tips for drivers and local guides are not included and are always your choice.
- Shopping stops such as cooperatives are optional. You never have to buy anything.
More questions about Marrakech day trips

Are child seats available?
[CONFIRM availability of child seats on day trips.] Please tell us the ages of any children when you book.
What if I feel unwell on the day?
Contact us as early as possible on WhatsApp. Changes and cancellations follow our booking terms and conditions [CONFIRM day-trip rules].
Can I book at short notice?
Often, especially outside the busy spring and autumn months, but it depends on vehicle and driver availability. Message us with your date and we will reply quickly [CONFIRM how late a booking can be made].
Do the trips run during Ramadan and on public holidays?
[CONFIRM operation on public and religious holidays.] During Ramadan some restaurants on the road may close at lunchtime, so ask your driver about options or bring snacks.
A sample week with Marrakech day trips
If you are based in Marrakech for a week, here is one relaxed way to use it:
- Day 1: arrive and rest.
- Day 2: explore the medina on foot.
- Day 3: the Ourika Valley, a short day out.
- Day 4: a free day in the city for gardens, museums or a hammam.
- Day 5: Essaouira or Ouzoud, depending on the season.
- Day 6: a free day for shopping and a last dinner.
- Day 7: departure.
This plan keeps two day trips apart, with rest days in between. For a bigger adventure, replace days 4 to 6 with a three-day desert tour.
Choose in three questions
- How much driving can you enjoy? Under three hours: Ourika. Five to six hours: Ouzoud or Essaouira. About eight hours: Aït Ben Haddou.
- What is the weather doing? Heat, storms or snow usually point to the coast.
- What do you want to remember? Water and nature, sea and town, or mountains and history.
Still unsure? Send us your dates and interests, and we will recommend one of our Marrakech day trips and explain why.
