A Merzouga 4×4 desert tour shows you the villages, families and landscapes around Erg Chebbi, with short drives and plenty of stops. A Merzouga 4×4 tour is the easiest way to see what lies around the dunes, not just on them. With a local driver you circle Erg Chebbi on tracks and quiet roads, stopping to hear Gnawa musicians in Khamlia, drink tea with a nomad family, walk through an old mining area and, on the full-day version, explore the market town of Rissani.
It suits a free day between two desert nights, and it works well for families: short drives, lots of stops, and no long hours in the saddle.

For general travel information about the region, including the Drâa-Tafilalet area around Merzouga, see the Moroccan National Tourist Office.

Why this circuit is different
Many dune trips are mostly about speed: driving up and down sand slopes. That can be fun, but you learn little about the place. Our team is from Merzouga, and this circuit is built around the people and history of the area. Some dune driving is part of it — you will feel the 4×4 climb and slide — but most of the day is about stops where you get out, meet people and ask questions. Your driver explains what you see and translates when needed.

The stops, one by one
The order changes with the season, the light and your interests. Your driver plans the route with you on the morning.
Khamlia: Gnawa music
Khamlia is a small village south of Merzouga known for its Gnawa community. Gnawa music has roots in West Africa and arrived here with people brought across the Sahara, many of them enslaved, centuries ago. In a music house in the village, musicians play drums and the qraqeb (large metal castanets) and explain the story behind the songs. You will usually be invited to join in. Mint tea is served. Musicians rely on visitors’ contributions — [CONFIRM: donation expected / included in price].
Tea with a nomad family
Some families still live a semi-nomadic life around the dunes, moving with their goats and camels. We visit a family we know [CONFIRM], share tea and bread, and see how they live with very little water. This is a visit to someone’s home, not a show. Please ask before taking photos of people, especially women and children. A small gift of food (sugar, tea, flour) is welcome; your driver can help you buy it beforehand.
Mifis: the old mining area
West of the dunes, the land is cut with old mine shafts and stone buildings from the lead and other mining that once took place here [CONFIRM what was mined]. It is quiet, a little eerie, and good for photos. Stay with your driver: shafts can be deep and are not fenced.
Dayet Srji (seasonal)
After a wet winter, a shallow lake can appear at Dayet Srji, west of the dunes, and sometimes attracts water birds, including flamingos in some years. In most months it is dry. We only include it when there is water to see [CONFIRM].
Fossil workshop
The rock around Merzouga is full of fossils — ammonites, trilobites and more — and local workshops cut and polish them. You can see how the stones are prepared. There is a shop, but there is no pressure to buy anything, and your driver does not take you there for a commission [CONFIRM].
Rissani: market and ksar (full day)
Rissani, about [CONFIRM distance/time] from Merzouga, was the centre of the historic Tafilalt region. You walk through the souk with your driver — the “donkey parking” is a favourite with children — and see the old ksar (fortified village). The market is busiest on souk days, traditionally Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday [CONFIRM current souk days].
Lunch: madfouna
Madfouna is a local speciality: flat bread stuffed with spiced meat, onions, egg and herbs, baked in a clay or sand oven. Vegetarian versions are possible. [CONFIRM: lunch included in price, or paid locally — approx. cost].

The half day is good if you also want a camel ride or quad bike session the same day. The full day is a better use of a whole free desert day.
Who it is for
A good fit if you: – have a free day in Merzouga and want to learn about local life – are travelling with children or older relatives who prefer short walks – want to avoid riding a camel or quad but still see the dunes up close
Not ideal if you: – mainly want speed and adrenaline — a quad bike or buggy ride fits that better – get car-sick easily: off-road sections are bumpy and the vehicle tilts on sand – are visiting in July or August and dislike heat — we start early and keep the hottest hours indoors, but it is still very hot
Price and how it is calculated
There is no online checkout; we send you a quote. The price depends on: – Half or full day – Number of people — the vehicle cost is shared, so per-person prices are lower for groups (up to [CONFIRM max seats per 4×4]) – Lunch and donations — whether madfouna and the Khamlia music contribution are included – Season — [CONFIRM seasonal pricing]
| Option | Price |

| Half day, private 4×4 (1–[CONFIRM] people) | [CONFIRM PRICE] |
| Full day, private 4×4 (1–[CONFIRM] people) | [CONFIRM PRICE] |
| Child price | [CONFIRM CHILD PRICING] |

Included and not included
Included: private air-conditioned 4×4 and fuel; local English-speaking driver [CONFIRM French also available]; pick-up and drop-off at your Merzouga hotel or camp [CONFIRM area]; bottled water [CONFIRM]; [CONFIRM: lunch; music contribution].
Not included: gifts for the nomad family; purchases at the fossil workshop or market; tips; travel insurance.
Add it to your trip
On a multi-day tour, the 4×4 circuit fits naturally into a full day in the dunes. Our 3-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour and 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour both include a whole day around Merzouga — ask us to plan this circuit for that day [CONFIRM: included or extra on those tours]. If you are staying independently, you can combine it with our overnight camel trek in Erg Chebbi: drive in the morning, ride out to camp in the late afternoon.
Questions about the Merzouga 4×4 desert tour
Will we drive on the big dunes?
Some sections cross sand and small dunes, and your driver will stop on a viewpoint. We do not drive on the high dunes near camps, and the tour is not a “dune bashing” ride.
Is it suitable for young children and babies?
Yes — it is one of our most family-friendly options. Tell us ages so we can bring child seats [CONFIRM availability].
Can we choose which stops to visit?
Yes. It is a private tour, so you can skip a stop, stay longer at another, or ask for more time in Rissani.
Is the nomad visit respectful, or is it staged?
It is a real family’s home [CONFIRM]. Visits are short and the family is paid for their hospitality [CONFIRM]. If a family does not want visitors that day, we go elsewhere.
What should we wear?
Light, loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees (more comfortable in sun and respectful in villages), a hat, sunglasses and closed shoes for the mining area.
Can we pay for lunch and donations in euros?
Bring dirhams in cash. Small places in Khamlia and Rissani usually do not take cards or foreign currency.

How a typical day runs
The plan below is a guide. Your driver adjusts it to the season, the light and what you want to see most [CONFIRM usual start times].
Half day
- Start: pick-up at your hotel or camp in the morning or mid-afternoon.
- First stop: Khamlia, for Gnawa music and mint tea.
- Second stop: tea with a nomad family near the dunes.
- Optional: a short stop at the old mines or a fossil workshop, if time allows [CONFIRM].
- Finish: back at your hotel or camp.
A half-day Merzouga 4×4 desert tour fits easily around a camel ride or a lazy afternoon by the pool.
Full day
- Morning: Khamlia and the nomad family, while it is still cool.
- Late morning: the Mifis mining area and a fossil workshop.
- Lunch: madfouna in a local restaurant.
- Afternoon: Rissani market and the old ksar, with Dayet Srji on the way when there is water.
- Late afternoon: return to Merzouga, in time for sunset on a dune if you wish.
On a full-day Merzouga 4×4 desert tour you are away from your hotel until late afternoon, so keep water, sunscreen and cash for lunch in a small bag.
Best time of day by season
In spring and autumn, almost any time works for a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour. Mornings are fresh and the light is soft, and afternoons are warm but pleasant.
In summer, we start a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour as early as possible and keep the hottest hours for indoor stops, such as lunch or the music house. A full day in July or August is tiring, so many families choose the half day.
In winter, days are short but usually sunny. A late-morning start avoids the cold early hours, and you return before the temperature drops in the evening.
What to bring
Pack light. Anything you do not need during a stop can stay in the vehicle.
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- A light scarf to cover your face if the wind picks up sand
- Water (your driver also carries some [CONFIRM])
- Closed shoes for the mining area and rocky ground
- Cash in dirhams for lunch, donations, gifts and small purchases
- A warm layer in winter, and for any sunset stop
Photography tips
The desert looks very different through the day. Early and late light shows the shape of the dunes; at midday, the sand looks flat and pale.
- Dunes: ask your driver to stop on the west side of Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon.
- Mifis: the old buildings and mine heads work well in low, side light.
- Rissani: the market is busy and colourful, but always ask before photographing traders or customers.
- Nomad family: ask first, and accept a polite no. Some families are happy to be photographed, others are not.
A good Merzouga 4×4 desert tour leaves time for photos without turning every stop into a photo session. Tell your driver if photography is important to you.
4×4, camel or quad: which should you choose?
| 4×4 circuit | Camel ride | Quad or buggy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | People, villages and landscapes around the dunes | The dunes themselves, at walking pace | Speed and fun on the sand |
| Physical effort | Low | Moderate (sitting on a camel) | Moderate |
| Good for children | Yes | Usually | Age limits apply [CONFIRM] |
| Learn about local life | A lot | A little | Very little |
Many visitors combine two of them. A Merzouga 4×4 desert tour in the morning and a camel ride at sunset make a full and varied day.
Safety on the tracks
On every Merzouga 4×4 desert tour, our drivers stick to tracks they know well around Erg Chebbi and drive at a sensible speed. Off-road sections can still be bumpy, and the vehicle tilts on soft sand.
- Wear your seatbelt, including in the back seats.
- Keep loose items in a bag, not on your lap.
- Tell the driver if anyone feels unwell, and he will slow down or stop.
- Stay with your driver at the mines, where old shafts are open and unfenced.
If you are pregnant or have a back condition, talk to us and to your doctor before booking a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour. We can suggest a route that avoids the bumpiest sections [CONFIRM].
Being a good guest
Most stops on this circuit are people’s homes, workplaces or community spaces. Your visit supports them, and a little respect makes it a better experience for everyone.
- Greet people before you ask questions or take photos.
- Dress modestly in villages: covered shoulders and knees is a good rule.
- Do not give money or sweets to children. A gift of food for the family, or a contribution at the music house, is better.
- Take all your rubbish with you.
These small gestures help keep a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour a fair exchange between visitors and the families who welcome them.
Weather and changes to the route
Strong wind can lift sand and reduce visibility, mostly in spring. On those days, your driver may change the order of the stops or spend more time in villages and less in the open desert.
After heavy rain, some tracks can be muddy or closed for a short time. We always choose the safer route, even if it means skipping a stop on your Merzouga 4×4 desert tour.
Combining it with your multi-day trip
If you are on one of our desert tours with a free day in Merzouga, tell us early that you would like to add a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour. We can plan the timing around your camel ride and camp night.
Travelling independently? You can also book a Merzouga 4×4 desert tour on its own, with pick-up from your hotel in the village [CONFIRM pick-up from other hotels and camps].
More questions
Can we do the tour in the afternoon?
Yes. An afternoon half day works well, especially in winter, and can end with sunset on a dune.
Are there toilet stops?
Yes. Cafés, the music house and the restaurant in Rissani have toilets. Facilities in the open desert are basic or absent, so use them when you can.
Can we bring our own snacks and drinks?
Of course. There is space in the vehicle for a small cool bag.
Is the Merzouga 4×4 desert tour possible for travellers with limited mobility?
Most stops need only short walks on flat or gently sloping ground. The mining area is uneven. Tell us about any mobility needs and we will plan the stops with you [CONFIRM accessibility].
Can we book on the same day?
Sometimes, if a vehicle and driver are free. Message us on WhatsApp in the morning and we will tell you what is possible.
Can our driver speak French?
English is our main language and many of our team also speak French [CONFIRM]. Ask when you book.
Do you run the tour every day?
Yes, as a private tour it can run on any date, subject to availability [CONFIRM]. If the Rissani market matters to you, choose a souk day for the full day.
What if we want a longer stop somewhere?
That is the advantage of a private Merzouga 4×4 desert tour: you can spend more time where you like and less time elsewhere, within the daylight available.
