Shared 3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour (Small Group)

Travelling alone or on a budget, you can still cross the Sahara in comfort on a shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour. Our shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour is the lower-cost way to cross Morocco through the Sahara. You share a minibus, a driver and a fixed timetable with other travellers for three days, from Marrakech over the Atlas to the Merzouga dunes and on to Fes.

What you do not share is your bed: every party gets its own private room on Night 1 and its own private tent with shower and toilet on Night 2. It is a good choice for solo travellers, couples and friends on a budget who are happy to follow a set plan.

What is shared and what is private

This is the most important thing to understand before you book, so here it is in plain terms.

How the shared tour differs from the private tour

The route is the same as our private 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour. What changes:

  • Fixed schedule. Departure days and times are set. Stops are the planned ones; the driver cannot add detours for one person.
  • Shorter stops. With more people, each stop is kept to its planned time so the group reaches the dunes before sunset.
  • Pick-up. Instead of door-to-door at any time, there is a set pick-up time or meeting point [CONFIRM].
  • Other travellers. Usually a mix of nationalities. English is the common language on board.
  • Price. You pay per seat, so a solo traveller does not pay for an empty vehicle.

If you want to set your own pace or start on any date, the private tour is a better fit. Not sure? Read private vs shared desert tours in Morocco.

Is the shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour right for you?

Choose shared if you: are travelling alone and want company and a fair price; are happy with a set timetable; do not need extra stops.

Choose private if you: want to start on any day; travel with young children who need flexible breaks; want to stop when you like; are a group of four or more (private can cost about the same per person — ask us).

Tips for shared-tour travellers

  • Be at the meeting point on time — the whole group waits otherwise.
  • Pack a small bag for the camp; your main suitcase does not go on the camel.
  • Bring dirhams in cash for three lunches, drinks and tips.
  • Bring a warm layer: desert nights from December to February can be close to freezing. In summer, days in Merzouga often pass 40 °C.

Frequently asked questions

Will I share a tent with people I do not know?

No. Every booking gets its own tent with its own shower and toilet. You only share with the people you booked with.

Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?

[CONFIRM: no supplement / supplement of X]. Solo travellers always get their own room and their own tent.

How many people are on the minibus?

Up to [CONFIRM MAX GROUP SIZE]. The number varies by date.

Which days does the shared tour leave Marrakech?

[CONFIRM SHARED DEPARTURE DAYS]. Send us your date and we will check the next available departure.

Can I be dropped at my riad in the Fes medina?

Vehicles cannot enter the old medina lanes. Drop-off is at [CONFIRM: your accommodation where reachable / a central point], and from there it is a short walk or taxi.

Can I ask the driver to stop for photos?

Yes, within reason and along the planned route. Longer detours are not possible on a shared tour because the group must reach the camels before sunset.

Can I do this tour the other way, from Fes?

Yes — see the shared Fes to Marrakech desert tour.

The evening before you leave

A little preparation the night before makes the early start much easier. These are the things travellers on our shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour most often wish they had done in advance.

  • Confirm your pick-up: check the time and meeting point in our message, and save our WhatsApp number [CONFIRM].
  • Pack two bags: a main bag for the vehicle and a small bag for the camp night.
  • Charge everything: phone, camera and a power bank.
  • Get some cash: dirhams for three lunches, drinks and tips. ATMs become less frequent after Ouarzazate.
  • Eat a light breakfast: the High Atlas road has many bends.

Making the most of a shared minibus

Spending three days with people you have just met is part of the fun. A few small habits help everyone enjoy the shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

  • Swap seats now and then so everyone gets a turn by the window and at the front.
  • If you get car sick, ask for a front seat early and take your usual medication before the mountain pass.
  • Use headphones for music or calls, and keep phone conversations short.
  • Bring snacks and water to share on the long drive days; roadside shops are not always open.
  • Agree on photo stops together. The driver keeps to the timetable, so a quick word as a group works better than many separate requests.

A note for solo travellers

Many people who book the shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour are travelling alone. You will usually find others to chat with at meals, at the campfire and on the dunes at sunrise.

You still have your own space. You sleep in your own room in the Dades Valley and your own tent at camp, with your own shower and toilet. If you prefer to keep to yourself for part of the trip, that is completely fine; nobody expects you to join every conversation.

Share your plans with someone at home and keep your phone charged. The camp team is there in the evening if you need anything [CONFIRM night staffing].

Budgeting beyond the seat price

The price of the shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour covers transport, two nights, breakfasts and dinners. A few costs are extra, and it helps to plan for them.

  • Lunches: three lunches at roadside restaurants, usually simple Moroccan dishes such as tagine or omelette.
  • Drinks: bottled water, soft drinks and mint tea along the way.
  • Optional guides: a local guide at Aït Ben Haddou or Todra Gorge if you want one [CONFIRM fees].
  • Tips: for the driver and the camp team, always your choice.
  • Souvenirs: carpets, fossils and argan products are sold along the route; buying is never required.

We do not list local prices here because they change; your driver can give you a sense of costs on Day 1.

Is the shared tour suitable for every age?

The shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour suits most healthy adults and older children who can manage long days in a vehicle. Days 1 and 3 involve many hours on the road, so younger children may find them tiring.

If you have back, knee or hip problems, tell us when you book; a 4×4 transfer to camp replaces the camel ride. Families with small children often prefer a private tour, where breaks can be added at any time.

Your first evening in Fes

You arrive in Fes in the evening, usually tired and hungry. After a long shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour, keep plans simple: check in, have dinner at your riad or a nearby restaurant, and sleep.

Save the medina for the next morning, when the lanes are lively and you have daylight to find your way. Many riads can arrange a licensed local guide for your first visit, which helps you get your bearings. Allow at least one full day in Fes, and two if you can.

What happens if a road is closed during the shared Marrakech to Fes desert tour?

In snow or heavy rain, the driver may change the route for safety, and timings can shift. The whole group travels together, so any change is explained to everyone on the spot [CONFIRM].
