The shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour is the simplest way to reach the Sahara on a smaller budget, with your own private room and tent. Our shared 3 day desert tour from Marrakech is the lower-cost way to reach the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga. You book a seat, not a whole vehicle. You travel with other travellers in a small group, on a fixed route and a fixed timetable. But one thing is not shared: at night, your party has its own room, and in the desert your own tent with its own shower and toilet.

On day 1 the group visits the earthen village that UNESCO lists as the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, one of the best-known sights in southern Morocco.
This page explains how the shared tour works in practice — where it starts, what time, who you travel with, what is fixed and what costs extra — so you can decide if it suits you before you ask for a seat.

How the shared tour works
You pay for a seat
On a private tour, one group pays for the whole vehicle and driver. On this tour, the cost is divided between everyone on board. That is why it is cheaper, especially if you travel alone or as a couple.
The route and stops are fixed
Everyone follows the same plan. The driver stops at the planned places for the planned time. You cannot ask for an extra detour, a longer lunch or a different return road, because other people are waiting too. Short photo stops along the way are at the driver’s judgement.
Your sleeping space is private
This is what makes our shared tour different. You never share a room or tent with strangers. Each party — one person, a couple, a family or friends — gets its own room in the Dades Valley and its own tent at the camp, with a private shower and toilet. We do not use basic camps with shared bathrooms.
Who you travel with
Shared groups usually mix nationalities: solo travellers, couples, students, friends. The common language on board is English. Ages vary. You do not need to know anyone.
Will the tour run?
Shared departures need a minimum number of travellers [CONFIRM minimum]. If a date does not reach it, we tell you as early as possible and offer another date, a private upgrade at a price we quote you, or [CONFIRM refund policy].

Meeting point, timings and luggage
Morning of day 1. Departure is at around [CONFIRM time, e.g. 07:00]. Most riads in the Marrakech medina cannot be reached by car, so shared tours usually start from a meeting point near Jemaa el-Fna square [CONFIRM exact meeting point], or with pick-up from hotels outside the medina [CONFIRM]. We send you the exact place and a contact number the day before.
Please be on time. The group cannot wait long for one person — the day is already full.
End of day 3. You arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, roughly [CONFIRM typical arrival time, e.g. 19:00–21:00]. Do not book an evening flight or train that day.
Luggage. Space in a shared vehicle is limited. Please bring one medium suitcase or backpack per person, plus a small day bag [CONFIRM luggage allowance]. At Merzouga you leave the big bag in the vehicle or at our base [CONFIRM] and take only a small overnight bag on the camel.
The route, day by day
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Aït Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Approx. 320–350 km · 6–7 h of driving plus stops · Meals: dinner
The group leaves Marrakech and climbs into the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (approx. 2,260 m; photo stop). Mid-morning or around noon you reach Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar, for a walking visit of about an hour [CONFIRM local guide included or optional]. Lunch is in a nearby restaurant at your own cost. The afternoon follows the kasbah road through Ouarzazate (pass through), the Skoura oasis (photo stop) and Kalaat M’Gouna (pass through) to the Dades Valley. Dinner and night in a hotel or riad such as Riad Gabsi or Ksar Sultan, or similar [CONFIRM].
Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Camel trek
Approx. 280 km · around 5 h of driving plus stops · Meals: breakfast, dinner
A short morning drive takes you into the Dades Gorge for the “Monkey Fingers” rock formations (photo stop). Then on to Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where you walk between rock walls roughly 300 m high (visit). Lunch in the area, not included. In the afternoon the group drives east to Merzouga. The camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes takes about [CONFIRM camel ride duration, approx. 1–1.5 h] and is timed for sunset.
If you cannot ride for health reasons, a 4×4 transfer is possible — tell us when you book. Dinner and a campfire with Berber drumming at Mouhou Luxury Camp, then a night in your private tent.
Day 3: Sunrise – Rissani – N’Kob – Draa Valley – Marrakech
Approx. 550 km · about 9.5–10 h of driving plus stops · Meals: breakfast
Early wake-up for sunrise over the dunes, then the camel ride back and breakfast [CONFIRM where]. The return road goes south: Rissani (pass through), Alnif (pass through), the kasbah village of N’Kob (photo stop, lunch nearby, not included), Agdz and the palm groves of the Draa Valley (photo stop), Ouarzazate (pass through) and back over the Tichka pass to Marrakech. This is a long day. Bring water, snacks and something to do.
Note: [CONFIRM that the shared return uses the Draa Valley route. If shared departures return via Todra/Dades instead, update this section and the meta description.]

Choose private if you: travel as a family or group of four or more (private can cost about the same per person [CONFIRM]); have young children who need flexible stops; want a specific date that is not a shared departure; or want to change the return route.
Tips for shared travellers
- Sit near the front if you get car sick, and ask early.
- Bring a light jacket — the minibus air conditioning can be cold.
- Carry dirhams in small notes for lunches and tips.
- Winter nights in the desert (December–February) can be near freezing; summer days can pass 40 °C.
- Keep valuables with you, not in the main luggage.
- Vegetarian and vegan meals are available on request.
Frequently asked questions
Do I share a tent with people I don’t know?
No. Each booking gets its own tent, with its own shower and toilet. A solo traveller has a tent to themselves.
Can you pick me up from my riad in the medina?
Usually not directly, because cars cannot enter most medina lanes. You meet the group at a nearby meeting point [CONFIRM]. We send the exact location and time before departure.
How many people are in the group?
Up to [CONFIRM maximum group size]. The number changes from day to day depending on bookings.
What happens if not enough people book my date?
We contact you as soon as we know and offer another date, a private tour at a quoted price, or [CONFIRM refund policy].
Is there a supplement for solo travellers?
Because you get a private room and tent, there may be one (single supplement: €70, so a solo traveller pays €230). Ask us and we tell you the exact amount before you book.
Can I end the shared tour in Fes instead?
Yes — choose the shared 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour. Starting in Fes? See the shared 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour.
Can the group stop longer somewhere I like?
Only if the whole group agrees and the day allows it. If flexibility matters to you, the private tour is a better fit.

How to ask for a seat
Booking is simple, but a few details help us answer quickly. When you write to us, include:
- Your preferred date and one or two backup dates
- The number of travellers and whether anyone is travelling solo
- The name or area of your accommodation in Marrakech
- Any food needs or health issues we should know about
We reply with availability for the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour on your date and the final price per seat [CONFIRM usual reply time].
Travelling well in a small group
Most groups get along easily. A few simple habits keep the three days pleasant for everyone.
- Be on time at every stop. If the driver says 20 minutes, come back in 20 minutes.
- Use headphones for music or videos.
- Share the good seats. If you sat at the window all morning, offer it to someone else after lunch.
- Say early if you feel unwell. The driver can make a short stop or change seats for you.
Good timing matters more on the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour than on a private trip, because one late return can make the whole group miss the sunset camel ride.
Where to stay in Marrakech before you go
Choose accommodation close to the meeting point of the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour if you can [CONFIRM meeting point]. A riad near Jemaa el-Fna or a hotel outside the medina with car access makes the early start much easier.
If you are staying further away, ask your riad to book a taxi the evening before. Most Marrakech taxis are small, so check your luggage fits.
Choosing your date
Spring and autumn are the busiest months, so seats on the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour can fill up early at those times. If you are flexible, give us two or three possible dates.
In summer, the south is very hot and the long return day can be tiring. In winter, nights at camp are cold, but days are often clear and sunny. Bring warm layers from December to February.
Solo travellers
Many people on the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour travel alone. It is an easy way to meet others without giving up your own space at night.
Because you have a room and a tent to yourself, there may be a supplement (single supplement: €70, so a solo traveller pays €230). Ask us for the exact amount before you confirm.
What to bring for the camp night
You carry only a small bag on the camel, so pack it before you leave Marrakech:
- A warm layer and a hat, even in spring and autumn
- Toothbrush, small towel and any medicine
- A torch or headtorch
- A power bank [CONFIRM charging at camp]
- Sunglasses and a scarf for wind and sand
Getting through the long return day
Day 3 is the longest day of the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour, with about 9.5–10 hours of driving before stops. It goes faster with a little planning.
- Buy water and snacks in Merzouga or Rissani before the long stretches.
- Download films, podcasts or books the evening before, as signal comes and goes.
- Use the lunch stop in N’Kob to walk around and stretch your legs.
- Keep a warm layer handy for the Tichka pass, which is cooler than the valleys.
Budgeting for the three days
The seat price covers your transport, two nights and the meals listed above. On the road, you pay for a few things yourself:
- Lunch on each of the three days, plus drinks
- Tips for the driver and camp staff, if you wish to leave them
- Any local guide or entry fee that is not included [CONFIRM]
- Snacks, water and small souvenirs
Plan to carry enough cash in dirhams for these costs. Cash machines are easy to find in Ouarzazate and Tinghir, but not everywhere along the route of the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour.
After the tour
You arrive back in Marrakech in the evening, usually tired after the long drive. Book your accommodation for that night in advance and keep the evening simple.
If you have more time, the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour combines well with a few relaxed days in the city. You can also add day trips from Marrakech to the coast or the mountains.
More questions about the shared 3 day Marrakech desert tour
Can children join?
Yes, children can join with their parents [CONFIRM minimum age and child pricing]. Remember that the last day is very long, so a private tour may suit young children better.

Yes, if they are comfortable with long hours in a vehicle and a fixed timetable. Tell us about any mobility needs, and we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to camp instead of the camel ride.
Can couples and friends sit together?
Yes. Tell the driver when you board and he will do his best to seat you together.
Can I leave extra luggage in Marrakech?
Many riads and hotels keep bags for guests who return after the tour. Ask your accommodation in advance.
Can I upgrade to a private tour later?
Yes, if a vehicle and driver are free on your date. We send you a separate quote for the private version [CONFIRM].
